(1970) and Home Before Midnight (1978), all presented here in new HD restorations, and featuring an arresting array of exclusive extras, including brand-new interviews with Walker himself. Now for the very first time, Walker’s finest non-horror movies are brought together for this spectacular new box-set, starring a host of famous faces: Robin Askwith (Confessions of a Window Cleaner), Francoise Pascal (Mind Your Language), James Aubrey (Bouquet of Barbed Wire) and David Kernan (Carry On Abroad). ‘X’-rated productions like School for Sex (which played solidly in London’s West End for over a year) display the exceptional early talents of Britain’s most celebrated and commercially successful director of his generation. Walker’s films didn’t shy away from controversial subject prostitution, underage sex, pornography and the criminal underworld – and proved irresistible to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Imogen Poots played Prue, and the progression from daddy’s girl to cynical young woman was inevitable but well played out.Years before he became revered as the ‘Gentleman of British Horror’, prolific filmmaker Pete Walker started his cinema career making hugely popular sexploitation movies and gangland thrillers. When his backstory was finally revealed, it was no wonder his character was so messed up. It was horrific watching as he slowly became unhinged. This was a very dark series over all, and superbly acted. Prue later dies in her father’s arms following a car accident. Gavin was destroying Prue’s family as recompense, it seems, for what Peter did all those years ago. Gavin loved Paula and wanted to protect her but they both received terrible abuse at the hands of their foster parents. Prue learns that Paula was her half-sister who was abandoned by Peter. Peter tells Cassie about his affair with Sarah. The threads of the story begin to come together. Gavin begins an affair with Prue’s mum, Cassie. A private investigator hired by Peter stabs Gavin with kitchen scissors, and Prue confronts her father because she feels he is responsible. Gavin’s flares of anger become more prominent, but socially everyone tries to put on a front of amicability. Prue is trying to track down information about who Paula is, and as a result of the scars from the physical abuse, she arouses the suspicions of the health visitor. He becomes slowly unhinged, and begins beating Prue. Gavin is also revealed to have endured a difficult homelife as a child when both of his parents committed suicide. Prue is keen to discover who Paula is, and this aggrevates Gavin greatly. Prue’s dad, Peter, has an affair with his young co-worker, Sarah. She sleeps with her English teacher, Gavin Sorensen (played by the super Tom Riley – more on him later.) Prue falls pregnant, and gives up doing her degree so she can move in with Gavin. It shows the very close relationship that exists between Prue and her dad, Peter. It has Hermione Norris, Imogen Poots and Trevor Eve among its cast. Its a 3-part drama about obsession, sexuality and violent relationships. I saw it again today, and was impressed by its dark nature. I first saw this originally when it came out in 2010.
